About Beylikdüzü: Istanbul's Oldest Harbor Meets Its Newest District
Beylikdüzü's history goes back much further than its modern skyline suggests. Archaeological excavations have identified the ancient port of Angurina, within the district's Kavaklı coastal area, as Istanbul's oldest known harbor, dating to the 4th century BC — the site was declared a first-degree archaeological protection zone in 2008. During the Byzantine era, the wider area was known as "Gardan," used mainly for farming and livestock, and it later passed into Ottoman hands after the 1453 conquest of Constantinople, continuing as agricultural land for centuries.
The area's Greek population left after the 1924 population exchange following the Turkish War of Independence, replaced by Turkish migrants who took up farming, herding and fishing. The settlement was renamed "Kavaklı" for the poplar trees that thrived in the local climate, and remained a small village under Çatalca district for decades.
A Modern District Born From Migration
Beylikdüzü's transformation into one of Istanbul's most modern districts accelerated sharply after the devastating 1999 Marmara earthquake, when many residents from more central, earthquake-damaged areas of the city relocated here, drawn by the district's more stable ground. Large-scale housing cooperatives and planned developments followed, and Beylikdüzü is now known for its wide streets, green spaces, shopping malls and the West Istanbul Marina on its coast.
