About Büyükçekmece: A Lakeside District with Roots in Antiquity
Büyükçekmece takes its name from the old Turkish word "çekmece," referring to the large rafts once pulled by hand to ferry people across the water here before any bridge existed. The district sits beside Büyükçekmece Lake, a lagoon formed where a stream met the rising waters of the Marmara Sea, cut off from the open sea by a thin strip of sand, gravel and clay. Today the lake supplies part of Istanbul's drinking water and is protected as a natural park with walking and cycling trails.
The area's history stretches back to the 7th century BC, when it was settled by Greek colonists and later known to the Byzantines as "Athyra" or "Atirus." Through the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, Büyükçekmece served as a coastal retreat, a resting point for traveling armies, and an agricultural area. Its most famous landmark, the multi-arched Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Bridge, was built in the 16th century by the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan across the channel connecting the lake to the sea, and it still stands today.
From Farmland to Modern District
Büyükçekmece remained under Çatalca district until becoming independent in 1987. After building its economy on agriculture until the 1950s, the district shifted toward industry and, more recently, organized modern housing — it's now known as one of Istanbul's more orderly districts, largely free of the informal, unplanned construction found elsewhere in the city.
