About Çatalca: Istanbul's Rural Frontier

Çatalca is Istanbul's largest district by land area, covering roughly 1,150 square kilometers of forests, farmland and scattered villages on the city's western edge, close to Thrace. Human settlement here dates back to around 2000 BC, when Thracian tribes first occupied the region, and organized settlement began around 450 BC near what is now İnceğiz village, home to caves that later sheltered persecuted religious communities during the early Byzantine era and have since appeared as filming locations for numerous movies.

Çatalca's strategic position guarding the western approach to Constantinople made it militarily vital for centuries. Between 507 and 511 AD, Byzantine Emperor Anastasius built a defensive wall stretching roughly 45 kilometers from Çatalca's Black Sea coast to Silivri — the second-longest defensive wall in history after the Great Wall of China, of which around 22 km still survives today. The district joined Ottoman territory in 1373 and later played a key defensive role during the Balkan Wars of 1912-13.

A Rural Escape Close to the City

Unlike much of urban Istanbul, Çatalca remains defined by agriculture, dairy farming and forests, with villages like Kabakça known for tree-lined streets and picnic areas, and Kuzuluk Nature Park offering a protected green space for visitors seeking a break from the city.
