About Silivri: Ancient Selymbria on the Marmara Coast

Silivri was known in antiquity as Selymbria, likely founded by Thracian settlers around 1200 BC — the "bria" ending in its name is a Thracian word meaning "city" or "town." According to the Greek geographer Strabo, the city had a legendary founder named Selis, whose name gave rise to "Selybria." The original settlement was built atop a steep, 56-meter hill overlooking a natural harbor on the Marmara coast, later enclosed by defensive walls, in what is now the district's Fatih neighborhood.

Selymbria's history reads like a tour of the ancient Mediterranean world: Persian-controlled during the Greco-Persian Wars, later part of the Athenian-led Delian League, sacked by invading Galatians around 280 BC, and eventually absorbed into the Byzantine Empire once Constantine made nearby Byzantium his new capital in 330 AD. Byzantine Emperor Arcadius even renamed the city "Evdoksiapolis" in honor of his wife Eudoxia, though the name never caught on with the public and was soon forgotten.

From Ancient Port to Modern Coastal District

Silivri became Ottoman territory in the early 1300s and has remained an important coastal settlement ever since, thanks to its position along what are now the E-5 and TEM highways connecting Istanbul to Europe. Today it's one of Istanbul's largest districts by land area, with 45 km of coastline and a strong agricultural tradition alongside its role as a popular summer getaway for Istanbul residents.
