The centre is split between the Karesi and Altıeylül districts. The Kuva-i Milliye Museum, in a 19th-century mansion, and the Zağanos Paşa Mosque are the sights people usually mention, and the local cheese-based dessert höşmerim has a protected geographical indication.
Hotels here mostly serve business travellers and university visitors, since the coast is more than ninety kilometres to the west. Streets have normal kerbside access, though the central shopping streets can clog up at peak hours, so give your driver the exact hotel or street name.
Bus, train or private car from İzmir Airport to Balıkesir?
There is no Havaş coach from the airport to Balıkesir. The public route means getting to İzmir Otogar first, either by İZBAN to Halkapınar and a change, or on the Havaş Manisa line that stops at the otogar but runs only twice a day, and then taking an intercity coach north. Alternatively, regional trains from the airport station run to Basmane, where the 6 Eylül and 17 Eylül Express services to Balıkesir depart. ESHOT's airport buses run at night only.
