Flying out of İzmir after olives, island lunches and the old stone streets of Ayvalık? The road from Ayvalık to ADB usually takes between two hours ten and two hours forty. Add the check-in time your airline requests, then leave a larger margin on summer weekends, when the D-550 near Altınova can slow right down. For a 12:00 international departure, a pickup around 05:30 to 06:00 keeps everything calm. If the flight is later in the day, enjoy a last breakfast on the seafront first.
Pickup from the old quarter, Cunda or Sarımsaklı
Your driver comes to the address you give. In the old quarter the lanes can be narrow, so the car often waits on a wider street, usually along Atatürk Bulvarı, and you wheel your bags the last stretch. Cunda Island is reached over the causeway, so allow a few extra minutes from there. Sarımsaklı beach hotels normally sit on roads that the car can reach to the door.

South by the Kuzey Ege motorway
Out of Ayvalık the car follows the D-550 past Altınova and the turn-off to Dikili, then picks up the O-33 motorway near Çandarlı, which carries you south to the İzmir ring road. From there it is a short run to Gaziemir and the airport. Most of the time that can be lost on this route is lost on the D-550 section, not on the motorway.
Making the ride easy
Two hours is long enough for a stop, so say so at pickup if you would like one. Families with children can ask for a pause near Altınova or at a town on the way. Keep a bottle of water and a snack within reach, and charge your phone so your boarding pass opens when you need it. A Mercedes Vito takes a family and its cases without a squeeze.
At the departures entrance
You are set down at the departures entrance of your terminal, with the check-in desks inside. Drivers speak English, so you can ask for help with bags. Check the building first: walking from one terminal to the other costs time you may not have.
Last morning in Ayvalık
If you have an hour before the car arrives, the seafront and the old market streets are close to most centrally placed guesthouses. Check out early, ask reception to hold your bags if you want a final walk, and be back at the agreed spot a few minutes before pickup. The driver waits only briefly at a busy kerb, so being ready helps everyone.
Coach, taxi or private transfer?
Intercity coaches leave Ayvalık Otogar, about a kilometre and a half south of the centre, for İzmir Otogar. That can work in daytime if you are travelling light, but it ends in Bornova, and the last link to the airport is on İZBAN via Halkapınar or by taxi. The drive takes about 130 minutes without traffic. Most airlines ask you to be at the airport about 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic one, so from Ayvalık plan a pickup about 5¾–7 hours before an international flight and 4¾–6 hours before a domestic flight. Always follow your own airline’s advice.
Example: for an international flight at 14:00, book your pickup for between about 07:00 and 08:15.
