Ayvalık is the olive town on the north Aegean coast, and İzmir Adnan Menderes is the nearest big airport with a wide choice of flights. A private car meets you just outside the arrivals exit, with a WhatsApp message after landing that gives the exact meeting point, and then drives north for a little over two hours to the old town, Cunda or Sarımsaklı.

An old Greek town on the north Aegean

Ayvalık was the Greek town of Kydonies, and its population stayed almost entirely Greek until 1922, before the 1923 exchange resettled it. The old quarter still holds hundreds of stone houses from the 19th and early 20th centuries, along with former churches such as Taksiyarhis. The district is one of Turkey's main olive-oil producers, and the hill of Şeytan Sofrası gives views over the Ayvalık Islands. In season, ferries cross to Mytilene on Lesbos.

North from the airport: the O-30 and the Kuzey Ege motorway

From Gaziemir the car takes the İzmir ring road (O-30) north, joins the O-33 North Aegean Motorway and follows it as far as it runs, close to Çandarlı port. The last part is the D-550 İzmir–Çanakkale road, which passes the Dikili turn-off and Altınova before reaching Ayvalık. Expect about two hours ten minutes to two hours forty minutes. Summer weekends and holiday periods can add a good deal on the D-550, so we recommend an extra half hour before any ferry or dinner reservation.

Three places to be dropped

Who is waiting at the ADB arrivals exit

Adnan Menderes has separate international and domestic terminals, each with its own arrivals exit. Leave through the one for your flight and the driver is just outside. A WhatsApp message with the exact point and a short video reaches you after landing, and the driver speaks English and can talk through the plan for the trip north.

Planning the two hours north

A late-evening landing makes for a quiet drive, and the driver can include one comfort stop on request, for example before you leave the motorway. Children often sleep through the D-550 section. Share your hotel name before you fly, as some guesthouses in the old quarter have only a small reception desk and need a heads-up about your arrival time. Our standard Mercedes Vito suits a family, and a Sprinter suits a group.

Narrow lanes and seafront stops

The old quarter has the lanes typical of a 19th-century town, and a larger vehicle cannot enter every one of them. The seafront Atatürk Bulvarı is the main through road and the easiest place for the car to stop. Setur Ayvalık Marina lies about a kilometre from the centre on the same boulevard, which makes it a handy landmark for the driver. Beach hotels in Sarımsaklı can generally be reached right to the door.

Public transport from ADB to Ayvalık, honestly

There is no direct airport bus to Ayvalık, and Havaş has no line there. The coaches run from İzmir Otogar, so you must first cross the city: by day a Havaş coach to the Otogar (only two departures a day are listed), or İZBAN to Halkapınar and then a city bus or taxi. The ESHOT line to the Otogar runs only at night. For a late arrival, children or luggage, a private transfer from İzmir Airport to Ayvalık beats three changes.

🔁 Going home: Ayvalık back to İzmir Airport

You can book the way back in the same booking: choose a return trip on the booking form and enter the date and pickup time for your flight home. On the day, your driver waits at your hotel entrance or your address at that time and helps with your luggage.

From Ayvalık the drive back takes about 130 minutes without traffic, so for an international flight choose a pickup about 5¾–7 hours before departure, and about 4¾–6 hours before a domestic flight. For a flight at 18:00, that means a pickup between about 11:00 and 12:15.

Traffic: İzmir traffic is heaviest on weekday mornings and evenings on the ring road and the roads into the airport; in summer the roads to and from Çeşme and Kuşadası are much slower at weekends and on public holidays, so leave earlier then.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the drive from İzmir Airport to Ayvalık?

Roughly two hours ten minutes to two hours forty minutes. Summer weekends on the D-550 can add more.

Can the driver take me to Cunda Island or Sarımsaklı?

Yes. Say which one when you book. Both are a short drive from the centre, and most Sarımsaklı beach hotels can be reached to the door.

Is there a bus from the airport to Ayvalık?

No direct one. You would need to reach İzmir Otogar first and take an intercity coach, which is slow with luggage.

Where does the driver wait at Adnan Menderes?

On the pavement outside the arrivals exit of your terminal. Once you land, expect a WhatsApp message with the exact spot and a short video.

Will the driver reach my guesthouse in the old quarter?

Some lanes are too narrow for a larger vehicle. The driver will stop at the nearest road, usually Atatürk Bulvarı, and you walk the last stretch.

Does the price change for a delayed flight?

No. Flights are tracked and there is no extra charge for flight delays.
