For a flight from İzmir Adnan Menderes you leave Cunda by the same causeway you arrived on and then drive south for a little over two hours. A private vehicle picks you up at your guesthouse or harbour hotel at the time you choose and delivers you to the departures entrance, with a buffer so that the island's one road does not catch you out.

From Cunda to ADB the drive normally takes about two hours twenty to two hours fifty. For an international flight, add about three hours at the airport, then a rest stop and the possibility of a slow D-550 on a Sunday. A midday departure from the island therefore suits an evening flight best, and a very early flight means setting off the evening before or in the small hours.
Getting off the island
Cunda has just one way out: the causeway through Lale Island and the strait bridge. On summer evenings and weekend afternoons that approach road is where holiday traffic collects, so a pickup before the rush is better than one at the peak. Tell us if your accommodation is in the harbour-front lanes; the vehicle cannot always reach the door, and we will agree a nearby meeting point that you can walk to with your bags.
Back across the mainland
- Over the causeway and through Ayvalık on the D-550.
- South past the Dikili turn-off to the end of the O-33 North Aegean toll motorway near Çandarlı.
- The İzmir ring road to the airport in Gaziemir.
The toll motorway is the quick part of the trip; the D-550 near Ayvalık is where holiday periods can stall, and we do not charge extra for that.
Which building at ADB?
International and domestic departures use separate terminals, and the driver stops at the right departures entrance. Please check which building your airline uses before you set off, since a wrong guess near the airport costs time.
Public transport, honestly
You can take a boat in season, or a local bus, from Cunda to Ayvalık, then a coach to İzmir Otogar. From the Otogar the airport still needs another leg: İZBAN rail is the usual daytime option, via Halkapınar, while the ESHOT airport buses run only at night. For a family with suitcases and a firm flight time, a private car is usually the calmer plan.
🛫 Cunda to İzmir Airport: when to leave for your flight
The drive takes about 150 minutes without traffic. Most airlines ask you to be at the airport about 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic one, so from Cunda plan a pickup about 6¼–7½ hours before an international flight and 5¼–6½ hours before a domestic flight. Always follow your own airline’s advice.
Example: for an international flight at 14:00, book your pickup for between about 06:30 and 07:45.
- Pickup: you choose the pickup time when you book; your driver waits at your hotel entrance or at your address at that time and helps with your luggage.
- Drop-off: the departures floor of the terminal your flight leaves from: İzmir Airport has two separate buildings side by side, the International Terminal and the Domestic Terminal.
- Traffic: İzmir traffic is heaviest on weekday mornings and evenings on the ring road and the roads into the airport; in summer the roads to and from Çeşme and Kuşadası are much slower at weekends and on public holidays, so leave earlier then.
- At the airport: Check on your ticket or in your airline’s app which terminal your flight leaves from and tell your driver, so you are dropped at the right building.

Which airport terminal will I be dropped at?
At the departures entrance of your airline's terminal, international or domestic. Please confirm it before you travel.
Is there a cheaper public option?
