Foça is the old fishing town on the Aegean coast that many İzmir residents choose for a weekend, and it is a good base for the first night of a holiday after a flight into Adnan Menderes Airport. Your driver meets you just outside the arrivals exit and drives north and then west to the harbour, in about an hour and a half.
✅ What's Included
What Foça offers after the flight
Foça stands on the site of ancient Phocaea, a seafaring Greek city whose sailors founded Massalia, now Marseille. Today it is a calm harbour town. The old centre wraps around two coves, Küçükdeniz and Büyükdeniz, with a medieval castle at the smaller one, a Hellenistic theatre and an Athena temple among the remains. Strict building rules protect the old stone houses, and Foça joined the Cittaslow network in 2021. The waters here are among Turkey's three marine protected areas for the endangered Mediterranean monk seal, and the Siren rocks stand just off the coast.
Which Foça is your Foça?
This matters for the booking. The district has two centres: Eski Foça, the old town on the harbour, and Yeni Foça, a separate resort about 20 km further north. They are close to each other on a map but not on a driver's schedule. Write the exact hotel or guesthouse name and which one it is, because the drive to Yeni Foça is a little shorter from the airport than to the old harbour. Small hotels and guesthouses sit around the old harbours, while more resort-style stays are in and around Yeni Foça.
North on the main road, then west to the sea
From ADB the driver follows the ring road (O-30) and then heads north on the Çanakkale road (D-550). The last section is the Foça road, provincial road 35-79. The alternative is the toll North Aegean Motorway (O-33) to its Foça exit. Plan on 70 to 95 minutes. Summer weekends add time, because Foça is a popular getaway for İzmir residents, so Friday evening arrivals should expect slower traffic.
Narrow lanes at the harbour
In the old town, the lanes around the two harbours are narrow. Cars stop on the harbour-front road or at the nearest accessible street to your guesthouse, and you wheel your bags the last stretch. Ask your host if there is a short walk, and bring shoes you can walk in on old paving.
Getting there without a private car
There is no direct public service from the airport. Regional buses and minibuses leave for Foça from the district platforms at İzmir Otogar, which means you must first reach the otogar. No Havaş line was found for Foça. After a flight, with bags, that is a long chain; a private transfer from the arrivals exit shortens it to one ride.
After you land, expect a WhatsApp message with the precise spot to find the driver and a clip showing the walk there. Our drivers speak English, so any question is easy to settle.
Time of day and season
In high summer, daytime arrivals meet the heaviest weekend traffic on the Foça road. Midweek flights, or a landing late in the evening, usually give a smoother drive.
If you arrive in the evening, ask your guesthouse about late check-in and a place to eat nearby, as the harbour restaurants can close early outside the season.
🔁 Going home: Foça back to İzmir Airport
You can book the way back in the same booking: choose a return trip on the booking form and enter the date and pickup time for your flight home. On the day, your driver waits at your hotel entrance or your address at that time and helps with your luggage.
From Foça the drive back takes about 85 minutes without traffic, so for an international flight choose a pickup about 5–5½ hours before departure, and about 4–4½ hours before a domestic flight. For a flight at 18:00, that means a pickup between about 12:30 and 13:00.
Traffic: İzmir traffic is heaviest on weekday mornings and evenings on the ring road and the roads into the airport; in summer the roads to and from Çeşme and Kuşadası are much slower at weekends and on public holidays, so leave earlier then.
