Ödemiş is a market town in the Küçük Menderes valley, and the airport sits on the road that leads to it: you drive south on the D-550, then east through the valley. Adnan Menderes lies on the same corridor as Ödemiş, so there is no trip through the city. The car heads south on the D-550 towards Torbalı, turns east onto the D-310 and follows the Küçük Menderes valley to the town. Typical times are 80 to 100 minutes, depending on the stretch through Torbalı, where local traffic can slow things down. Birgi is about 10 km further east, and a mountain road climbs from there towards Bozdağ.
Ödemiş, Birgi and the high ground
Ödemiş is said to be Turkey's biggest potato-growing area, and its district includes Birgi, the former capital of the Aydınid beylik. Birgi has Seljuk and Ottoman buildings, among them the 1313 Aydınoğlu Mehmet Bey Mosque and the 18th-century Çakırağa Mansion, and it is on UNESCO's tentative list. The ruins of ancient Hypaepa lie about 4 km north of Ödemiş. Above the town, the Bozdağ mountains carry the Gölcük plateau lake and a ski centre that opens only in years with enough snow.
Where the car can go in Birgi
The cobbled streets of Birgi are narrow and some are closed to cars, so the driver stops at the edge of the village or the nearest accessible point, and you walk to your guesthouse. Ödemiş itself has ordinary streets and is straightforward. If you stay in a boutique guesthouse, ask the owner for walking directions and send them to us on WhatsApp.
Meeting the driver at ADB
Come out of the arrivals exit of your terminal; international and domestic flights land at different buildings. Your driver will message you on WhatsApp with the exact meeting point and a short video, and he follows your flight, so a late arrival leads to no extra charge. After a long-haul flight the hour and a half feels longer than the map suggests, so ask for a water stop if you want one.
Train, bus or car
Timetables list TCDD regional trains between İzmir and Ödemiş that call at the airport station, with only a few departures per day, so confirm the current timetable at tcddtasimacilik.gov.tr before counting on one. Intercity buses and minibuses run between Ödemiş and İzmir Otogar, but getting to the bus station from the airport is another step. For a late arrival or a group, one car straight to the door is easier. For a winter trip to Bozdağ, snow can affect the mountain roads, so check conditions first. Staying in the valley
Ödemiş's small hotels sit in the town, while Birgi offers boutique guesthouses and there is some lodging around Gölcük and Bozdağ. Send the exact name of your lodging at booking. The driver is then ready for the narrow approach in Birgi or the mountain road, and nobody has to hunt for a street name at the end of a long day.
A note on Gölcük
The Gölcük plateau lake is part of the Bozdağ mountain area and has its own road. If your hotel is up there, mention it at booking time, because the climb takes longer than the valley and the last stretch depends on the weather.
