Leaving the centre for a flight is mostly a question of timing. A driver collects you at your Konak or Basmane hotel at the hour you choose and takes the southbound road to Adnan Menderes in about 25 to 30 minutes when the streets are clear. Working backwards from your boarding time
Most travellers aim to reach the airport about three hours before an international departure and roughly two before a domestic one. Add the drive, which is 20 to 30 minutes off-peak and can reach 40 to 55 minutes on a weekday rush hour, and add a little margin for bags and a last coffee. For a mid-morning flight, a pickup at breakfast time is usually safe; for a lunchtime flight the worst traffic is already behind you.
Being found in the old centre
Konak's hotels sit on very different kinds of street. Around Basmane and Çankaya many entrances are on narrow one-way lanes where a van cannot wait, and the Kemeraltı bazaar itself is closed to normal traffic. When you book, give the exact hotel name. On the morning your driver contacts you on WhatsApp, and if the front door is awkward he will suggest the nearest wider corner, for example on Fevzipaşa Bulvarı or Anafartalar Caddesi. Wheeling a large case over worn stone and market kerbs is slow. If you are staying deep in the bazaar, allow ten extra minutes to reach the car.
Which building do you fly from?
İzmir Airport has an international terminal and a domestic terminal next to each other. Look at your booking before you leave the room and tell the driver which one you need; he stops at its departures entrance. If you get it wrong, the two buildings are linked, so it costs a short walk rather than a taxi ride.
Metro and İZBAN as a back-up plan
Basmane, Çankaya and Konak all have İzmir Metro M1 stations. Ride to Hilal, change to İZBAN, and the train takes you to the airport station that stands in front of the domestic terminal. This suits a mid-day flight and a light bag. The network's first trains leave around 05:20, so an early-morning departure needs a car anyway. At night ESHOT's bus 202 leaves Cumhuriyet Meydanı at 00:00, 02:00 and 04:00, which helps if a flight leaves before dawn and you travel alone.

Taxi or transfer from the centre?
A taxi from a rank near Konak Square is fine if you travel alone with one bag and your flight is relaxed. The trouble starts when you are two families, the weather is bad or the flight is early, because then you stand at the kerb waiting for a car that may not come. A booked car is at the door at the time you chose, and the driver has your flight number, so it takes one decision off the morning.
Family and group travel
A Mercedes Vito takes up to six passengers and seven bags. A larger party can use a Sprinter, which means one vehicle at the kerb rather than three taxis competing for space on a narrow street. Ask for it when you book if there are more than six of you.
🛫 Konak to İzmir Airport: when to leave for your flight
The drive takes about 25 minutes without traffic. Most airlines ask you to be at the airport about 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic one, so from Konak plan a pickup about 3½–3¾ hours before an international flight and 2½–2¾ hours before a domestic flight. Always follow your own airline’s advice.
Example: for an international flight at 14:00, book your pickup for between about 10:15 and 10:30.
