Muğla city lies inland, in the hills well above the Gökova coast, and the simplest way there from İzmir is a single private ride instead of a coach terminal and a change in Aydın. Your driver tracks your flight, meets you just outside the arrivals exit and drives to Menteşe, the district that holds the city centre.
✅ What's Included
ADB to Muğla by way of Aydın
The first hour is the toll İzmir–Aydın Motorway (O-31) heading south-east from Gaziemir. At Aydın the car leaves it for the D-550, which runs through Çine and Yatağan before arriving in Muğla. Typical journey time is between two and a half and three and a quarter hours, depending on traffic around Aydın.
It is a long drive, so be honest with yourself about the alternatives. Muğla Province also has airports at Dalaman and Bodrum, and a flight into one of those may put you closer to your hotel. ADB is often chosen because it has more, or cheaper, international flights, and a private ride makes the extra distance easy.
What "Menteşe" means on your booking
Menteşe is the central district of Muğla Province, created in 2013 from the former central district, and it covers the provincial capital. If your hotel address says Menteşe, you are in the city itself. The province's coastal resorts belong to other districts, so choose their names instead if you are heading for the beach.
A hill city with an old quarter
Muğla sits at around 660 metres, roughly 30 km inland from the Gulf of Gökova. Its old quarter around Saburhane Square holds about 400 registered 18th- and 19th-century houses with courtyards and tall chimneys. Nearby are the Ulu Cami of 1344, the Kurşunlu Cami of 1495, restored caravanserais such as Konakaltı Han and the Vakıflar Hamam. A university gives the city a student crowd, but there are far fewer hotels than on the coast, since most visitors stay by the sea.
Where the car stops in the old streets
Most addresses on the main avenues around the centre are reachable by car. The lanes around Saburhane are narrow, so the driver may leave you at the nearest road and you walk the last stretch. Send the hotel name and address with your booking so he knows where to pull in.
After landing at Adnan Menderes
He waits just outside the arrivals exit of your terminal. When you have landed, a WhatsApp message arrives with the exact meeting point and a short video of the route from the door.
Taxi or transfer to Muğla?
There is no Havaş coach or train from the airport to Muğla. The public option is an intercity coach from İzmir Otogar in Bornova to Muğla otogar, which means getting across İzmir first. One vehicle for the whole party, straight to the hotel, avoids that. The İzmir Airport guide to the city, Çeşme and Kuşadası sets out how the local options compare.
Making the long ride worthwhile
Because the D-550 is an ordinary main road after Aydın, there are towns to stop in along the way, such as Çine and Yatağan, if anyone wants tea or a stretch. Just ask the driver. Muğla is also the provincial capital, so some guests arrive on business at the province's offices and the university rather than for sightseeing.
The price is for the vehicle, not per head. A Vito takes up to six passengers and a Sprinter up to fifteen, so a group splitting the cost finds the distance far easier to bear than a solo traveller would.
🔁 Going home: Muğla back to İzmir Airport
You can book the way back in the same booking: choose a return trip on the booking form and enter the date and pickup time for your flight home. On the day, your driver waits at your hotel entrance or your address at that time and helps with your luggage.
From Muğla the drive back takes about 145 minutes without traffic, so for an international flight choose a pickup about 6¼–7½ hours before departure, and about 5¼–6½ hours before a domestic flight. For a flight at 18:00, that means a pickup between about 10:30 and 11:45.
Traffic: İzmir traffic is heaviest on weekday mornings and evenings on the ring road and the roads into the airport; in summer the roads to and from Çeşme and Kuşadası are much slower at weekends and on public holidays, so leave earlier then.
